RARE Coroniceras reyensi Fossil Ammonite – Lower Sinemurian, Jurassic – Hechingen, Germany – Alice Purnell Collection

£48.00

Offered here is a rare and scientifically significant fossil ammonite of the species Coroniceras reyensi from the Lower Sinemurian Stage of the Early Jurassic, dating to approximately 199 to 190 million years ago. This authentic specimen originates from the historic fossil locality of Hechingen, Germany, and forms part of the respected Alice Purnell Collection, renowned for its well-documented and museum-grade fossil material.

Coroniceras reyensi is a distinctive ammonite species belonging to the Arietitidae family. These cephalopods are characterised by their large, involute, and robust shells with strong, regularly spaced ribbing. During their time, they thrived in shallow epicontinental seas and were part of the early diversification of ammonoids following the end-Triassic extinction.

This particular specimen has been preserved in excellent condition, showing clear coiling, detailed ribbing, and good matrix contrast, making it ideal for both collectors and academic reference.

Geological Context: The Lower Sinemurian is part of the Early Jurassic and is notable for a renewed burst of marine biodiversity, especially among ammonites. The marine deposits of Hechingen, located in southwestern Germany, are famous for yielding exceptionally well-preserved ammonites in limestone and marl beds that once formed part of an ancient tropical sea floor. These deposits offer crucial insights into post-extinction recovery and Jurassic stratigraphy.

Jurassic Information

The Jurassic Period (201–145 million years ago) was the golden age of dinosaurs, with iconic species like Brachiosaurus, Stegosaurus, and Allosaurus dominating the land. It was a time of warm, humid climates, with high sea levels that created vast shallow seas, supporting abundant marine reptiles, ammonites, and early coral reefs. The first birds, such as Archaeopteryx, evolved from small theropod dinosaurs, while early mammals remained small and nocturnal. Lush forests of cycads, conifers, and ferns covered the land, providing food for giant herbivores. The breakup of the supercontinent Pangaea accelerated, shaping Earth's geography and setting the stage for the diverse ecosystems of the Cretaceous.
