This beautifully preserved ammonite is a representative of mid-Jurassic ammonoid evolution within the Tethyan marine realm.

Cranocephalites vulgaris is a member of the family Cardioceratidae, and is recognised by its:

  • Sharply ribbed, compressed whorls
  • Fine, dense radial ornamentation, often bifurcating mid-flank
  • Strongly involute coiling and a narrow umbilicus
  • Species: Cranocephalites vulgaris
  • Order: Ammonitida
  • Superfamily: Perisphinctoidea
  • Family: Cardioceratidae
  • Geological Stage: Middle Callovian, Middle Jurassic
  • Location: Switzerland
  • Depositional Environment: Open marine shelf, western Tethyan basin
