ABOUT THE FOSSIL:
This remarkable double Crioceratites loryi ammonite fossil is from the Middle Hauterivian stage of the Early Cretaceous period (~132-129 million years ago) and was discovered in Drôme, France. Crioceratites is a genus of heteromorph ammonites, meaning it exhibited an uncoiled or irregularly coiled shell structure, unlike the tightly coiled ammonites commonly found in the fossil record.
Heteromorph ammonites like Crioceratites loryi were free-swimming marine cephalopods related to modern squids and octopuses. Their unique shell morphology suggests they had different buoyancy and mobility strategies compared to their coiled relatives, allowing them to drift or hover in the water column. This rare double ammonite fossil preserves two specimens together, making it an exceptional piece for collectors and researchers alike.
