Dapedium Fish Scale Fossil – Jurassic Coast, Dorset, UK

This rare and highly collectible Dapedium fish scale section fossil originates from the world-famous Jurassic Coast of Dorset, specifically the Black Ven Marls of Charmouth near Lyme Regis. Dating back to the Lower Lias of the Early Jurassic period, this specimen represents an exceptional example of early marine vertebrate life preserved in fine sedimentary deposits.

The exact fossil shown in the photographs is the one you will receive, carefully selected for its clarity and scientific interest. Each piece includes a Certificate of Authenticity with a lifetime guarantee, ensuring confidence in its genuine origin.

Geological Formation & Age

This fossil comes from the Black Ven Marls, part of the Lower Lias Group, which dates to the Early Jurassic period, approximately 201–174 million years ago. These deposits are renowned for their finely laminated mudstones and marls, formed in a calm, shallow marine environment.

The depositional setting was a low-energy seabed where fine sediments accumulated, allowing for exceptional preservation of delicate structures such as fish scales, soft tissues, and articulated skeletons. The Jurassic Coast, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is globally recognised for its continuous geological record and abundance of marine fossils.

Fossil Type & Species Identification

This specimen represents a section of fossilised scales from the extinct genus Dapedium, a distinctive prehistoric fish belonging to the order Dapediiformes. Dapedium is well known for its deep-bodied form and thick, enamel-like ganoid scales, which provided protection against predators in Jurassic seas.

The scales are typically rhomboidal in shape, with a hard, glossy surface composed of ganoine, a mineralised tissue similar to enamel. These scales often display subtle surface ornamentation and articulation patterns, reflecting their interlocking arrangement across the fish’s body.

Dapedium species were adapted to reef and coastal environments, feeding on hard-shelled organisms such as molluscs and crustaceans, using strong jaws and crushing teeth.

Morphology & Preservation

This fossil scale section exhibits characteristic features of Dapedium, including robust, thickened scale structure and a distinctive geometric form. The preservation within the marl matrix highlights fine textural details, with natural colour contrasts between the fossil material and surrounding sediment.

The fossilisation process has retained the original structural integrity of the scales, with visible layering and mineralisation that developed over millions of years. Such preservation is typical of the Black Ven Marls, where rapid burial and low oxygen conditions limited decay.

Palaeoenvironment & Scientific Significance

During the Early Jurassic, the region that is now Dorset was submerged beneath a warm, shallow sea teeming with marine life. Dapedium was a common component of this ecosystem, coexisting with ammonites, marine reptiles, and other fish species.

Fossils from this formation provide valuable insights into early marine ecosystems, evolutionary adaptations, and biodiversity following the end-Triassic extinction. The presence of well-preserved fish scales contributes to our understanding of dermal armour evolution in early actinopterygian fishes.

Presentation & Authenticity

This fossil is presented exactly as photographed, offering a genuine and unaltered glimpse into Jurassic life. Its natural preservation, geological context, and identifiable features make it a desirable addition to any fossil collection.

Included with the specimen is a Certificate of Authenticity, guaranteeing its status as a genuine fossil with a lifetime assurance. Whether for display, study, or investment, this Dapedium fish scale fossil is a remarkable piece of natural history from one of the most iconic fossil localities in the world.
