Rare Eocene Small Mammal Mandible Fossil

This carefully chosen specimen is a rare fossilised right mandible from a small mammal, recovered from the Barton Group at Barton-on-Sea, Hampshire, UK. Dating to the Bartonian Stage of the Eocene Epoch, it represents part of the lower jaw of a mammal that lived in southern Britain approximately 41 to 38 million years ago.

Small terrestrial vertebrate remains are considerably less commonly encountered in marine deposits than the abundant shells of gastropods and bivalves for which Barton-on-Sea is famous. This genuine fossil jaw fragment therefore makes a particularly interesting addition to a British vertebrate fossil collection, Eocene display or specialist natural history cabinet.

The Bartonian is a stage of the Eocene Epoch within the Palaeogene Period. It takes its name from the classic fossil-bearing succession around Barton-on-Sea, making fossils from this locality particularly representative of Bartonian geology.

During the Eocene, southern Britain experienced a much warmer climate than it does today. The Hampshire Basin contained shallow subtropical seas bordered by coastal habitats and vegetated land. Rivers, tides, coastal erosion and storm events could carry terrestrial remains from nearby land into marine environments.

A small mammal jaw may have reached the sea through river transport, shoreline erosion or the movement of a carcass from the coastal landscape. Once deposited on the seabed, rapid covering by clay, silt or sand could protect the bone from complete destruction.

After burial, the organic components of the jaw gradually decayed while mineral-rich groundwater moved through the surrounding sediment. Minerals entered pores and internal spaces within the bone, helping to preserve its form over millions of years.

Continued accumulation of sediment created pressure that compacted the deposit and eventually transformed it into sedimentary rock. Later erosion of the Barton cliffs exposed the fossil-bearing layers and released specimens from their ancient geological setting.

The fossil’s colour and texture reflect a combination of original bone structure, mineral alteration and the chemistry of the surrounding sediment. Its preserved surface may retain areas of recognisable bone grain, tooth sockets or other anatomical features visible in the listing photograph.
