Geological & Scientific Information:
Species: Erymnoceras coronatus
Type: Fossil Ammonite (extinct marine cephalopod)
Geological Period: Jurassic
Stage: Callovian (approx. 166–163 million years ago)
Location Found: Russia
Order: Ammonitida
Superfamily: Stephanoceratoidea
Family: Stephanoceratidae
Morphological Features: Erymnoceras is recognised by its robust, involute shell with prominent ribbing and characteristic coronate tubercles (nodes or spines along the whorl). The suture lines are complex and deeply lobed. This specimen displays the genus’s signature spiny appearance and dense ribbing, typical of mid-Callovian ammonite fauna.
Depositional Environment: Shallow marine shelf environment composed of marl and limestone, indicative of calm to moderately dynamic seafloor conditions. These conditions were optimal for the fossilisation of ammonite shells in fine-grained sediments.
Scientific Importance: Erymnoceras is biostratigraphically important and often used in regional correlation within the Callovian of Europe and Asia. Its ornate features also reflect evolutionary responses to predation and environmental changes during the Middle Jurassic.
Additional Notes:
Specimens like this are prized not only for their scientific value but also for their aesthetic appeal. Erymnoceras coronatus is a hallmark species for Callovian ammonite collections and makes a standout display piece.
