Description
RARE Eurypterid Fossil – Eurypterus remipes
Discovered in the renowned Fiddler’s Green Formation (Waterlime), Bertie Group, Herkimer County, New York, USA, this is a genuine and exceptionally preserved fossil of Eurypterus remipes – one of the best-known species of extinct marine arthropods commonly referred to as “sea scorpions.”
This specimen dates to the Silurian period, specifically the Pridoli stage (~419 million years ago), and is part of one of the most scientifically significant eurypterid deposits in the world. The fossil is embedded in dolostone-rich waterlime, a fine-grained sedimentary rock that contributes to the exquisite preservation of fine anatomical details, such as leg segments, telson (tail spine), and prosomal (head) structures.
Fossil Overview:
- Species: Eurypterus remipes
- Common Name: Sea Scorpion
- Fossil Type: Body fossil (complete or partial depending on specimen)
- Size: See photo – scale cube = 1cm
- Location Found: Fiddler’s Green Formation, Bertie Group, Phelps, Herkimer County, NY, USA
- Geological Age: Silurian Period – Pridoli Stage (~419 Ma)
- Stratigraphy: Bertie Group → Fiddler’s Green Formation (Waterlime)
- Depositional Environment: Restricted lagoon or marginal marine setting – shallow hypersaline waters conducive to preservation
- Lithology: Dolomitic waterlime (fine-grained carbonate)
- Biozone: Not formally designated, but correlates with Eurypterid Lagerstätte horizons
Taxonomy:
- Kingdom: Animalia
- Phylum: Arthropoda
- Class: Merostomata
- Order: Eurypterida
- Family: Eurypteridae
- Genus: Eurypterus
- Species: remipes
- Formal Description By: DeKay, 1825
Morphological Features:
- Distinctive Paddles: Adapted for swimming
- Segmented Abdomen & Tail (Telson): Flattened or stylized into a lance-like spike
- Chelicerae & Limbs: Frequently preserved in dorsal aspect
- Carapace: Horseshoe-shaped with eye impressions sometimes visible
- Preservation Style: Light to dark brown fossil within grey/cream waterlime slab
Notable Significance:
- Eurypterus remipes was the first eurypterid formally described in North America, and is the state fossil of New York
- Represents an extinct lineage of marine predators that predate vertebrate dominance in aquatic ecosystems
- Often regarded as an important reference species for Paleozoic aquatic arthropod evolution
- Specimens from this locality are globally regarded as museum-grade fossils
