RARE Flexicalymene caractaci Trilobite Fossil

Caradoc Stage, Upper Ordovician – Coed Maes Newyddion, Eryri (Snowdonia), Wales, UK

Offered here is a beautiful and scientifically significant specimen of the trilobite Flexicalymene caractaci, found at Coed Maes Newyddion, within the historic fossiliferous strata of Eryri (Snowdonia National Park), North Wales. This fossil dates to the Caradoc Stage of the Upper Ordovician, a key period for marine biodiversity and trilobite evolution.

Geological and Palaeontological Details:

  • Fossil Type: Trilobite (typically enrolled specimen)
  • Species: Flexicalymene caractaci
  • Locality: Coed Maes Newyddion, Eryri (Snowdonia), North Wales, UK
  • Geological Age: Upper Ordovician, Caradoc Stage (approx. 460–449 million years ago)
  • Formation: Likely part of the Bala Group, which is prevalent in this area
  • Depositional Environment:
  • Marine shelf to deeper marine setting
  • Fine-grained sediment indicates low-energy deposition with occasional turbidity influences
  • Biozone: Didymograptus murchisoni or associated trilobite biozones in the Caradoc sequence
  • Order: Phacopida
  • Family: Calymenidae
  • Superfamily: Calymenoidea
  • Morphology Features:
  • Typically enrolled posture, a defensive response in life
  • Broad, arched glabella (central head lobe)
  • Semi-circular cephalon and pygidium
  • Genal angles generally rounded or slightly produced
  • Thoracic segments with well-defined pleural furrows
  • Scientific Relevance:
  • Flexicalymene caractaci is key to biostratigraphy in the British Ordovician and aids in dating marine sequences
  • Widely studied as a representative of widespread British calymenid trilobites
  • Named by Murchison (1859), a prominent early geologist and palaeontologist

Product Specifics:

  • The exact specimen photographed is the item you will receive
  • Scale Reference: 1cm cube/square included in photos – please see images for precise sizing

Ordovician Information

The Ordovician Period (485–443 million years ago) was a time of marine expansion and biodiversity growth, following the Cambrian Explosion. Warm, shallow seas covered much of the continents, supporting trilobites, brachiopods, corals, and the first true reefs. Jawless fish (early vertebrates) diversified, and the first sea scorpions (eurypterids) became dominant predators. On land, the first primitive plants (moss-like bryophytes) began colonizing damp environments. The climate was initially warm, but by the late Ordovician, a major ice age caused a drastic drop in sea levels, triggering the Ordovician-Silurian mass extinction, which wiped out nearly 85% of marine species. Despite this, the period laid the foundation for the rise of more complex ecosystems in the Silurian.
