RARE: Ochetoceras canaliculatum Fossil Ammonite

Middle Oxfordian, Jurassic

Le Vanneau, Deux-Sèvres, France

This exceptional and rare ammonite specimen represents the species Ochetoceras canaliculatum, a classic member of the Middle Oxfordian stage of the Upper Jurassic period. It was discovered in the well-known marine Jurassic strata near Le Vanneau, in the Deux-Sèvres region of western France — an area historically rich in fossil finds.

Ochetoceras is characterised by its distinctive deeply incised canaliculate (grooved) venter, narrow whorls, and fine ribbing. These features are easily seen in this well-preserved specimen, making it both scientifically and aesthetically significant. The genus belongs to the family Oppeliidae, within the superfamily Haplocerataceae, and the order Ammonitida.

This species thrived in open marine shelf environments, where fine carbonate sediments allowed for excellent fossilisation. The Oxfordian stage marks a time of active ammonite diversification, and Ochetoceras canaliculatum is often used for biostratigraphic correlation in European Jurassic sequences.

Jurassic Information

The Jurassic Period (201–145 million years ago) was the golden age of dinosaurs, with iconic species like Brachiosaurus, Stegosaurus, and Allosaurus dominating the land. It was a time of warm, humid climates, with high sea levels that created vast shallow seas, supporting abundant marine reptiles, ammonites, and early coral reefs. The first birds, such as Archaeopteryx, evolved from small theropod dinosaurs, while early mammals remained small and nocturnal. Lush forests of cycads, conifers, and ferns covered the land, providing food for giant herbivores. The breakup of the supercontinent Pangaea accelerated, shaping Earth's geography and setting the stage for the diverse ecosystems of the Cretaceous.
