Description
This is a rare Pentremites gudoni blastoid fossil from the Point Creek Formation, Carboniferous (Mississippian stage), discovered in Millstadt, Illinois, USA. Blastoids, often referred to as “sea buds,” are an extinct class of echinoderms closely related to crinoids. They thrived in ancient shallow marine environments, filtering food particles from the water using delicate brachioles.
This well-preserved specimen showcases the classic star-shaped ambulacra and calyx structure characteristic of blastoids. Fossils from the Carboniferous period provide valuable insights into early marine ecosystems, making this an excellent addition for collectors and researchers alike.
