RARE Fossil Heteromorph Ammonite Eubostrychoceras elongatum | Santonian Cretaceous | COUTENAY, Canada | Genuine Specimen with Certificate

£36.00

Add a truly unique specimen to your fossil collection with this Eubostrychoceras elongatum heteromorph ammonite from the Santonian stage of the Late Cretaceous period. Sourced from the renowned marine fossil site of Coutenay, Canada, this striking ammonite showcases the peculiar uncoiled, helical morphology typical of heteromorphs — a captivating spiral form unlike the standard planispiral ammonites.

This fossil represents a genus within the family Nostoceratidae, superfamily Turrilitoidea, and order Ammonitida. Heteromorph ammonites like Eubostrychoceras are often interpreted as slow swimmers, adapted to a unique ecological niche in the upper water column or soft seafloor.

This specimen likely derives from a marine chalk or marl matrix within the Western Interior Seaway depositional environment, which during the Santonian (~86.3–83.6 million years ago) covered large parts of North America, teeming with life.

Geological Context:

  • Species: Eubostrychoceras elongatum
  • Fossil Type: Heteromorph Ammonite
  • Age: Late Cretaceous, Santonian Stage
  • Formation: Likely part of the Nanaimo Group (exact unit requires locality specifics)
  • Location: Coutenay, British Columbia, Canada
  • Order: Ammonitida
  • Superfamily: Turrilitoidea
  • Family: Nostoceratidae
  • Morphology Features: Long, loosely coiled helically twisted shell; tubercles and fine ribbing may be present depending on preservation; evolved for buoyancy rather than speed
  • Depositional Environment: Shallow marine shelf of the Western Interior Seaway

All of our Fossils are 100% Genuine Specimens & come with a Certificate of Authenticity.

Scale Rule Squares / Cube = 1cm: Full sizing please see photo. The fossil shown is the actual item you will receive. Hand-selected for quality, preservation, and aesthetic form. Ideal for collectors, educational displays, and gifts for enthusiasts of natural history.

Cretaceous Information

The Cretaceous Period (145–66 million years ago) was the final era of the Mesozoic, marked by the dominance of dinosaurs and the rise of flowering plants. It had a warm, greenhouse climate, with high sea levels that created vast shallow inland seas. Marine life flourished, including mosasaurs, ammonites, and rudist reefs, while the land was ruled by iconic dinosaurs like Tyrannosaurus rex, Triceratops, and Spinosaurus. Mammals and birds diversified, and insects thrived. The period ended with the mass extinction event, likely caused by an asteroid impact, wiping out the dinosaurs and paving the way for the rise of mammals in the Cenozoic.
