RARE HETEROMORPH AMMONITE – SCAPHITES EQUALIS

Geological Age: Lower Cenomanian, early Late Cretaceous (~100.5–97 million years ago)

Location: Seine-Maritime, Normandy, France

Stratigraphy: Likely within the basal Cenomanian chalk or marly limestone beds

From the Alice Purnell Collection

Supplied with a Certificate of Authenticity

This is a beautiful and rare fossil ammonite specimen of Scaphites equalis, a heteromorph ammonite from the Lower Cenomanian strata of Seine-Maritime, a classic locality in the Normandy region of France. Known for its marine deposits and well-preserved Cretaceous fauna, this site yields ammonites of excellent scientific and aesthetic value.

GEOLOGICAL & TAXONOMIC DETAILS:

  • Species: Scaphites equalis
  • Age: Lower Cenomanian (Early Late Cretaceous)
  • Formation: Likely derived from the basal chalk or associated marlstone beds of the English/French transgressive chalk platform
  • Depositional Environment:
  • Marine open shelf with moderate depth, rich in planktonic and benthic life
  • Low sedimentation rates allowed for excellent fossil preservation
  • Zone & Biozone: Typically associated with the Mantelliceras mantelli ammonite biozone in Cenomanian sequences
  • Morphological Features:
  • Heteromorph coiling with an initial tightly coiled whorl transitioning into a partially uncoiled body chamber
  • The shell exhibits fine ribbing and tuberculate ornamentation
  • Believed to have had a partially free-swimming or drifting life habit near the sea floor
  • Order: Ammonitida
  • Superfamily: Scaphitoidea
  • Family: Scaphitidae
  • Notable:
  • Scaphites is one of the most recognisable heteromorph ammonite genera, and S. equalis is a diagnostic species of the Cenomanian
  • Its unique coiling makes it a favourite among collectors and researchers alike
  • Well-preserved specimens like this are uncommon in the commercial fossil trade

SPECIMEN DETAILS & FEATURES:

This particular fossil has been carefully chosen for its distinct coiling, surface preservation, and excellent contextual clarity. The scale rule (1cm cube squares) in the photo allows for full visual assessment of size and proportion. You will receive the exact specimen shown in the photos.

This fossil is part of the prestigious Alice Purnell Collection, known for its curated selection of well-documented, authentic Mesozoic fossils.

WHAT’S INCLUDED:

Cretaceous Information

The Cretaceous Period (145–66 million years ago) was the final era of the Mesozoic, marked by the dominance of dinosaurs and the rise of flowering plants. It had a warm, greenhouse climate, with high sea levels that created vast shallow inland seas. Marine life flourished, including mosasaurs, ammonites, and rudist reefs, while the land was ruled by iconic dinosaurs like Tyrannosaurus rex, Triceratops, and Spinosaurus. Mammals and birds diversified, and insects thrived. The period ended with the mass extinction event, likely caused by an asteroid impact, wiping out the dinosaurs and paving the way for the rise of mammals in the Cenozoic.
