Metasequoia is one of the most significant palaeobotanical discoveries of the 20th century. Once believed extinct and only known through fossils, living specimens of Metasequoia were rediscovered in remote parts of China in the 1940s. This tree is considered a “living fossil”—an incredibly rare example of a genus surviving for tens of millions of years almost unchanged.

The Oligocene Epoch (33.9–23 million years ago) was a time of cooling climates and the transition to more modern ecosystems.
