This rare giant 8″ ammonite fossil of the species Dichotomosphinctes antecedens is an outstanding and eye-catching collector’s piece from the famous Tulear region of Madagascar, which is celebrated for its exceptional Middle Jurassic fossil preservation.

Ammonites such as Dichotomosphinctes antecedens were marine cephalopods that lived during the Callovian stage of the Jurassic period, about 166 to 163 million years ago. These animals were related to modern squids, octopuses, and cuttlefish, but they had a hard, coiled external shell used for buoyancy and protection. Their spiral shells grew in chambers as they aged, leaving behind highly patterned fossils with beautiful ribbed ornamentation.

This fossil shows classic features of Dichotomosphinctes, including strongly ribbed whorls and a beautifully defined spiral structure. Its large size (8 inches) and excellent preservation make it a rare and desirable specimen, especially for those who appreciate Jurassic ammonites or seek a centrepiece fossil for a private or educational display.

Madagascar’s Tulear region is one of the world’s richest ammonite fossil sites. The limestone beds here provide outstanding matrix preservation and allow for detailed preparation, resulting in high-contrast fossil features that highlight the natural geometry and beauty of the ammonite shell.

Jurassic Information

The Jurassic Period (201–145 million years ago) was the golden age of dinosaurs, with iconic species like Brachiosaurus, Stegosaurus, and Allosaurus dominating the land. It was a time of warm, humid climates, with high sea levels that created vast shallow seas, supporting abundant marine reptiles, ammonites, and early coral reefs. The first birds, such as Archaeopteryx, evolved from small theropod dinosaurs, while early mammals remained small and nocturnal. Lush forests of cycads, conifers, and ferns covered the land, providing food for giant herbivores. The breakup of the supercontinent Pangaea accelerated, shaping Earth's geography and setting the stage for the diverse ecosystems of the Cretaceous.
