Specimen Overview:

This rare ammonite specimen is Graphoceras scriptum, a beautiful and scientifically significant species from the Aalenian stage of the Middle Jurassic. It was discovered in the classic fossil-rich strata of Calvados, Normandy—an area renowned for Jurassic marine deposits.

The specimen pictured is the exact one you will receive. A 1cm scale rule cube is included in the image for accurate size reference. Please see the photograph for full sizing and preservation detail.

Geological Context & Depositional Environment:

During the Aalenian, the region of present-day Normandy was submerged beneath a shallow epicontinental sea. The sedimentation of calcareous clays and marls in these marine environments contributed to the excellent preservation of ammonites.

Graphoceras scriptum is characteristic of the Opalinum Zone within the Aalenian and serves as a key biostratigraphic marker across Europe. Fossils from this zone help in dating and correlating Jurassic marine sequences throughout the Tethyan and Boreal realms.

Morphology & Notable Features:

This ammonite exhibits a finely ribbed, involute shell with tight coiling and a relatively small umbilicus. The species is distinguished by its dense, sinuous ribbing that crosses the flanks and gently curves around the venter.

The pattern of the ribbing often appears script-like—hence the name scriptum—giving it a highly decorative appearance, which adds to its appeal among collectors and palaeontologists.

Authenticity & Guarantee:

All of our fossils are 100% genuine and come with a Certificate of Authenticity. This specimen has been carefully selected, cleaned, and stabilised to ensure its quality and longevity for display or research.

Jurassic Information

The Jurassic Period (201–145 million years ago) was the golden age of dinosaurs, with iconic species like Brachiosaurus, Stegosaurus, and Allosaurus dominating the land. It was a time of warm, humid climates, with high sea levels that created vast shallow seas, supporting abundant marine reptiles, ammonites, and early coral reefs. The first birds, such as Archaeopteryx, evolved from small theropod dinosaurs, while early mammals remained small and nocturnal. Lush forests of cycads, conifers, and ferns covered the land, providing food for giant herbivores. The breakup of the supercontinent Pangaea accelerated, shaping Earth's geography and setting the stage for the diverse ecosystems of the Cretaceous.
