Rare iridescent baculites fossil ammonite – baculites compressus, pierre shale, maastrichtian, cretaceous, montana, usa

Original price was: £132.00.Current price is: £105.60.

This is a rare, beautifully iridescent Baculites compressus ammonite fossil from the Maastrichtian stage of the Late Cretaceous period (~72-66 million years ago), discovered in Montana, USA. Baculites were a genus of straight-shelled ammonites, an extinct group of marine cephalopods closely related to modern squid and cuttlefish. Unlike their coiled relatives, Baculites developed an elongated, uncoiled shell, allowing for greater hydrodynamic efficiency in open marine environments.

This specimen is notable for its stunning natural iridescence, caused by the preservation of the original nacreous shell layers. The shimmering colors make this fossil highly desirable among collectors and paleontology enthusiasts.

Cretaceous Information

The Cretaceous Period (145–66 million years ago) was the final era of the Mesozoic, marked by the dominance of dinosaurs and the rise of flowering plants. It had a warm, greenhouse climate, with high sea levels that created vast shallow inland seas. Marine life flourished, including mosasaurs, ammonites, and rudist reefs, while the land was ruled by iconic dinosaurs like Tyrannosaurus rex, Triceratops, and Spinosaurus. Mammals and birds diversified, and insects thrived. The period ended with the mass extinction event, likely caused by an asteroid impact, wiping out the dinosaurs and paving the way for the rise of mammals in the Cenozoic.
