Description
This is a rare, beautifully iridescent BACULITES OCCIDENTIS ammonite fossil from the Campanian stage of the Late Cretaceous period, discovered in Collisham Point, British Columbia, Canada. Baculites were straight-shelled ammonites, an extinct group of marine cephalopods related to modern squid and cuttlefish. Unlike coiled ammonites, Baculites had a long, uncoiled shell, which allowed them to navigate open marine environments.
The exceptional aragonite shell preservation on this specimen displays stunning natural iridescence, a result of the original nacreous layers reflecting light. This makes it highly sought after by collectors, particularly those interested in well-preserved ammonites with aesthetic and scientific value.
