RARE Isastrea explanata Fossil Coral Great Oolite Jurassic Gloucestershire UK Display Specimen

£60.00

This rare and well-preserved specimen of Isastrea explanata is a stunning fossil coral from the Great Oolite Group, Jurassic period, discovered in Gloucestershire, UK. Dated to the Bathonian stage (Middle Jurassic), this colonial coral is approximately 166–168 million years old and serves as a fascinating window into the shallow tropical seas that once covered what is now southern England.

Isastrea is a genus of extinct colonial stony corals known for forming dome-like or mound-shaped colonies. The species I. explanata exhibits neatly arranged, star-like corallites with visible septal structures that indicate its scleractinian lineage. These coral colonies were essential reef builders during the Jurassic and are often found within fine-grained oolitic limestones.

The photo shows the exact specimen you will receive. Scale cube/squares = 1cm for accurate sizing. The fossil has been carefully selected for its scientific and aesthetic qualities and is ideal for collectors, display, or educational use.

Jurassic Information

The Jurassic Period (201–145 million years ago) was the golden age of dinosaurs, with iconic species like Brachiosaurus, Stegosaurus, and Allosaurus dominating the land. It was a time of warm, humid climates, with high sea levels that created vast shallow seas, supporting abundant marine reptiles, ammonites, and early coral reefs. The first birds, such as Archaeopteryx, evolved from small theropod dinosaurs, while early mammals remained small and nocturnal. Lush forests of cycads, conifers, and ferns covered the land, providing food for giant herbivores. The breakup of the supercontinent Pangaea accelerated, shaping Earth's geography and setting the stage for the diverse ecosystems of the Cretaceous.
