Description

RARE Jeletzkytes Ammonite Fossil

## Genuine Late Cretaceous ammonite from North Dakota

This rare Jeletzkytes ammonite is a genuine fossil specimen from the Pierre Shale of North Dakota, USA. It dates to the Late Cretaceous, within the Campanian–Maastrichtian interval, and offers a tangible connection to the ancient Western Interior Seaway that once covered much of central North America. The photographs show the exact carefully selected specimen you will receive, making it an appealing choice for fossil collectors, ammonite enthusiasts, geology students and natural-history displays.

## Fossil type and geological significance

Ammonites were extinct marine cephalopods, related to living nautiluses, squid and octopuses. Their chambered shells helped control buoyancy, while their characteristic coiled form and intricate sutures have made them among the most sought-after fossils for collectors. Jeletzkytes is a recognised ammonite genus from the latest Cretaceous of North America. Its presence in the Pierre Shale connects this specimen with one of the region’s most important marine fossil-bearing sedimentary sequences.

The Pierre Shale formed as fine sediment accumulated beneath the waters of the Western Interior Seaway. Over millions of years these marine sediments became shale, preserving ammonites and other traces of ancient sea life. This specimen is therefore both a striking natural object and direct evidence of an ecosystem that existed shortly before the close of the Cretaceous Period.
