RARE Litavkaspis rejkovicensis Trilobite Head Fossil – Jince Formation, Middle Cambrian – Skryje, Czech Republic

This fossil is a highly collectable and rare example of a trilobite cephalon (head) from the species Litavkaspis rejkovicensis, discovered in the Jince Formation near Dubinky Hill, Skryje, in the Czech Republic. Representing the Middle Cambrian, this region is one of Europe’s classic fossil sites, world-renowned for its exceptional preservation and rich palaeontological history.

This particular specimen is a natural trilobite head fossil (cephalon only), showcasing characteristic features of this extinct arthropod in remarkable detail.

Fossil Overview:

  • Species: Litavkaspis rejkovicensis
  • Type: Fossilised Trilobite Head (Cephalon)
  • Geological Formation: Jince Formation
  • Location: Dubinky Hill, near Skryje, Beroun District, Czech Republic
  • Geological Age: Middle Cambrian (Drumian Stage) – approx. 504–500 million years ago
  • Depositional Environment: Marine muds and fine silts from a quiet, offshore shelf environment
  • Lithology: Siliceous to calcareous shales and siltstones with well-preserved fauna

Morphology & Features:

Litavkaspis rejkovicensis is a small member of the Ellipsocephalidae family, typical of Middle Cambrian trilobites found in the Prague Basin. This fossil preserves the cephalon (head) with notable features including:

  • Gently tapering glabella
  • Smooth, broad cranidium
  • Semi-circular shape with reduced genal spines
  • Sutures indicating well-developed facial lines
  • Lacks prominent eyes – consistent with deep-water adaptation

These morphological traits are diagnostic for the genus Litavkaspis, and the fossil provides excellent reference for Cambrian trilobite head structure and taxonomy.

Taxonomy & Stratigraphy:

  • Order: Ptychopariida
  • Superfamily: Ellipsocephaloidea
  • Family: Ellipsocephalidae
  • Genus: Litavkaspis
  • Species: rejkovicensis
  • Zone: Middle Cambrian (exact biozone uncertain)
  • Described By: J. Vaněk, 1966

This species is endemic to the Bohemian Massif and has been used as a stratigraphic indicator within the Jince Formation. The area has yielded fossils of both trilobites and soft-bodied fauna, adding great research and collector value.

Notable & Scientific Relevance:

  • From a classic Cambrian Lagerstätte in the Prague Basin
  • Excellent preservation of trilobite cephalic morphology
  • Ideal for scientific study, educational use, or private collections
  • Highly desirable species due to restricted geographic and stratigraphic range
  • Accompanied by a full Certificate of Authenticity

Specimen Information:

  • Condition: Good preservation; typical matrix with clear cranidial structure

Cambrian Information

The Cambrian Period (541–485 million years ago) was the first period of the Paleozoic Era, marking a dramatic explosion of life known as the Cambrian Explosion. During this time, complex multicellular organisms rapidly diversified, giving rise to the first arthropods, mollusks, echinoderms, and chordates—early ancestors of vertebrates. The climate was generally warm, with high sea levels covering much of the continents, creating vast shallow seas where life thrived. Iconic creatures such as Trilobites, Anomalocaris, and Opabinia dominated the oceans, while the first primitive reefs formed. The Cambrian set the stage for the evolution of modern animal groups and the complexity of marine ecosystems.
