Description
This is a rare Lytocrioceras heteromorph fossil ammonite, dating to the Lower Aalenian stage of the Middle Jurassic (~174-170 million years ago), discovered in Rhône, France. Lytocrioceras is a fascinating heteromorph ammonite, meaning it had a shell that did not follow the typical coiled structure seen in most ammonites. Instead, it exhibited an irregular, loosely coiled form, an adaptation that likely influenced its buoyancy and swimming behavior in Jurassic seas.
Fossils from the Aalenian stage are significantly rarer than those from other Jurassic stages, making this specimen a highly collectible and scientifically valuable piece. Its unique shell structure provides insight into the evolutionary diversity of ammonites during the Middle Jurassic.
