Rare micraster gosseleti fossil echinoid – cretaceous – navarra, spain – genuine certified sea urchin fossil

£36.00

This listing features a rare and genuine Micraster gosseleti fossil echinoid, collected from Cretaceous strata in Navarra, Spain. This beautifully preserved fossil represents one of the most iconic genera of fossil echinoids that lived during the Late Cretaceous period.

Micraster was a genus of heart-shaped echinoids (sea urchins) that thrived in shallow marine environments. The species Micraster gosseleti is characteristic of Late Cretaceous chalk and marl formations and is particularly known from sites across Europe, including Spain, France, and the UK. These echinoids are easily recognised by their symmetrical, heart-shaped test, deeply incised ambulacra (grooves), and petaloid structure.

The chalk and marl formations that preserve these fossils were deposited approximately 90 to 70 million years ago, during a time when much of Europe was covered by a warm, shallow sea. The fine-grained sediment that settled in these ancient seabeds allowed for exceptional preservation of marine life, including echinoids like Micraster.

Micraster fossils provide invaluable insight into the paleoecology of the Cretaceous seas and are popular among collectors for their aesthetic and scientific value. This specimen, with its crisp preservation and provenance from Navarra, Spain, is an excellent addition to any fossil collection.

Cretaceous Information

The Cretaceous Period (145–66 million years ago) was the final era of the Mesozoic, marked by the dominance of dinosaurs and the rise of flowering plants. It had a warm, greenhouse climate, with high sea levels that created vast shallow inland seas. Marine life flourished, including mosasaurs, ammonites, and rudist reefs, while the land was ruled by iconic dinosaurs like Tyrannosaurus rex, Triceratops, and Spinosaurus. Mammals and birds diversified, and insects thrived. The period ended with the mass extinction event, likely caused by an asteroid impact, wiping out the dinosaurs and paving the way for the rise of mammals in the Cenozoic.
