Rare micraster mengandi fossil echinoid – campanian, cretaceous – cabo mayor, santander, spain – genuine certified sea urchin fossil

£36.00

This listing features a rare and genuine Micraster mengandi fossil echinoid, discovered in the Campanian stage of the Late Cretaceous from Cabo Mayor, Santander, Spain. Known for its distinctive heart-shaped structure, this echinoid is a prized find among marine invertebrate fossils from the Upper Cretaceous.

Micraster is an extinct genus of echinoids (sea urchins) that lived in shallow marine environments, and Micraster mengandi is a well-documented species from this group. These creatures are characterised by their bilateral symmetry, heart-shaped test, and petaloid ambulacra. They burrowed into soft marine sediments, filtering organic particles for nutrition.

The Campanian age, part of the Upper Cretaceous period (approximately 83.6 to 72.1 million years ago), was a time when extensive chalk and marl beds were being deposited across Europe due to rising sea levels. The fine-grained sediments found at Cabo Mayor have preserved many fossil species in exquisite detail, including this exceptional echinoid.

Fossils like Micraster mengandi offer a valuable glimpse into the paleoenvironments of the Cretaceous and are sought after both for their scientific interest and their natural beauty. This specimen is a stunning and rare addition to any fossil or natural history collection.

Cretaceous Information

The Cretaceous Period (145–66 million years ago) was the final era of the Mesozoic, marked by the dominance of dinosaurs and the rise of flowering plants. It had a warm, greenhouse climate, with high sea levels that created vast shallow inland seas. Marine life flourished, including mosasaurs, ammonites, and rudist reefs, while the land was ruled by iconic dinosaurs like Tyrannosaurus rex, Triceratops, and Spinosaurus. Mammals and birds diversified, and insects thrived. The period ended with the mass extinction event, likely caused by an asteroid impact, wiping out the dinosaurs and paving the way for the rise of mammals in the Cenozoic.
