Description
**Rare Morocconites and Hollardops Trilobite Fossils**
This exceptional A-grade fossil specimen features the rare trilobite Morocconites malladoides together with Hollardops mesocristata from Jbel Oufatene, Morocco. Both are genuine Devonian fossils from the Eifelian Stage, approximately 393 to 388 million years old. The association offers two contrasting trilobite forms in one carefully chosen display piece, creating strong scientific and collector interest. The photographs show the exact specimen you will receive, allowing you to inspect its preservation, preparation, matrix, natural colour and relationship between the fossils before purchase. Please refer to the photographs for full sizing.
**Middle Devonian Geology of Jbel Oufatene**
Jbel Oufatene lies within the fossil-rich region of south-eastern Morocco, where extensive sedimentary rocks preserve a remarkable record of Devonian marine life. During the Eifelian, this area lay beneath a warm sea along the northern margin of the ancient continent Gondwana. Carbonate mud and other sediments accumulated across the seabed, supporting diverse communities of trilobites, brachiopods, corals, crinoids, molluscs and cephalopods.
The two trilobites became buried within seabed sediment after death. Timely burial helped protect their mineralised exoskeletons while compaction, mineral replacement and chemical alteration gradually transformed the surrounding sediment into rock. Later geological uplift and erosion brought the fossil-bearing strata close to the surface, allowing the specimen to be discovered and carefully prepared from its matrix.
**Two Distinctive Trilobite Forms**
Morocconites malladoides and Hollardops mesocristata both display the classic trilobite body plan, divided lengthways into a central axial lobe and two pleural lobes and crossways into a cephalon, articulated thorax and pygidium. Despite sharing this fundamental construction, their proportions and surface forms demonstrate the remarkable diversity that trilobites achieved in Devonian seas.
The cephalon protected the head region and carried compound eyes that helped each animal detect light and movement. A prominent glabella covered important organs, while articulated thoracic segments provided flexibility as the trilobites moved across the seabed. Their segmented exoskeletons also enabled defensive enrolment, bringing armoured regions together to protect the softer underside from predators and disturbance.
Hollardops is well known for a robust, strongly sculpted appearance and a distinctive phacopid-style form. The rarer Morocconites adds unusual taxonomic interest to the association. Displayed together in their natural matrix, the fossils offer a direct comparison of morphology, body proportions and preservation within the same broad marine setting.
**Rare Collector Display Specimen**
This combined fossil is suitable for an advanced trilobite collection, geology cabinet, museum-style display or educational resource. The presence of two identifiable genera makes it especially useful for illustrating Devonian arthropod diversity and fossil association. Its authentic Jbel Oufatene provenance connects the piece with one of Morocco’s celebrated fossil-producing regions.
As a genuine fossil excavated and prepared from rock, the specimen may show natural matrix, mineral staining, fine cracks, small chips, preparation marks, stabilised or restored areas and variations in surface texture. These characteristics are normal for prepared trilobites and form part of the specimen’s individual geological and collecting history. The photographs document the actual piece supplied rather than a stock example.
**Hand-Signed Premium Certificate of Authenticity**
This Morocconites malladoides and Hollardops mesocristata specimen includes a fully hand-signed Premium Certificate of Authenticity. The certificate confirms that the fossils are genuine and records their supplied geological age and provenance. The rare two-trilobite association, authentic Eifelian age, classic Moroccan origin, A-grade presentation and signed premium certification make this an outstanding centrepiece for a collection of Devonian fossils or prehistoric marine life.
