Description

**Rare A-Grade Morocconites malladoides Trilobite Fossil**

This genuine Morocconites malladoides is a rare A-grade trilobite fossil from Jbel Oufatene, Morocco. It dates to the Eifelian Stage of the Middle Devonian, approximately 393 to 388 million years ago. The specimen has been carefully selected for its quality, character, uncommon identity and display appeal. The photographs show the exact fossil you will receive, allowing you to inspect its preservation, matrix, preparation and natural colour before purchase. Please refer to the photographs for full sizing.

**Middle Devonian Geology of Jbel Oufatene**

Jbel Oufatene lies within the fossil-rich region of south-eastern Morocco, where extensive Devonian sedimentary rocks preserve a remarkable record of ancient marine life. During the Eifelian, this area lay beneath a warm sea along the northern margin of the ancient continent Gondwana. Carbonate mud and other sediments accumulated across the seabed, supporting communities of trilobites, brachiopods, corals, crinoids, molluscs and cephalopods.

After this trilobite died, its mineralised exoskeleton was buried within seabed sediment. Timely burial protected portions of the remains from complete destruction. Compaction, mineral replacement and chemical alteration over millions of years transformed the surrounding sediment into rock and preserved the fossil. Later uplift and erosion brought the fossil-bearing strata close to the surface, allowing specimens to be discovered and carefully prepared from their matrix.

**Distinctive Trilobite Form**

Morocconites malladoides displays the characteristic three-part construction that gives trilobites their name. The exoskeleton is divided lengthways into a central axial lobe and two pleural lobes, while the body is divided crossways into a cephalon, articulated thorax and pygidium. This combination created a strong but flexible suit of armour suited to life on the Devonian seafloor.

The cephalon protected the head region and carried compound eyes that helped the living animal detect light and movement. The central glabella covered important organs, while the segmented thorax allowed flexibility during crawling and defensive enrolment. At the rear, the pygidium completed the body and helped form a compact protective shape when the animal curled inward.

Subtle differences in the proportions of the head, axial region, thoracic segments and tail are important for distinguishing trilobite genera and species. The specimen therefore offers both visual appeal and scientific interest, illustrating the diversity of specialised arthropods that inhabited Devonian seas.

**Rare Collector Fossil and Educational Display**

This Morocconites malladoides is suitable for an advanced fossil cabinet, specialist trilobite collection, geology display or educational resource. Its relative rarity makes it particularly appealing to collectors seeking an unusual Moroccan species rather than one of the more frequently encountered Devonian trilobites. Its authentic Jbel Oufatene provenance also connects it with a classic North African fossil locality.

As a genuine fossil excavated and prepared from rock, the specimen may show natural matrix, mineral staining, fine cracks, small chips, preparation marks, stabilised or restored areas and variations in surface texture. Such characteristics are normal for prepared trilobites and form part of the fossil’s individual geological and collecting history. The photographs document the actual specimen supplied rather than a stock example.

**Certificate of Authenticity**

Your Morocconites malladoides trilobite includes a generic Certificate of Authenticity card with a lifetime guarantee. This confirms that it is a genuine fossil and records its supplied geological age and provenance. The combination of rare species, authentic Eifelian age, Jbel Oufatene origin, A-grade presentation and certification makes this fossil a notable addition to a collection of Moroccan trilobites, Devonian arthropods or prehistoric marine life.
