Description
Offered here is an extremely rare and scientifically valuable specimen of Normannites latansatum, an extinct genus of ammonite from the Middle Jurassic (Bajocian stage), approximately 170 million years ago. This striking fossil was discovered at Oborne Wood, Sherborne, within the well-known Inferior Oolite Formation, a site celebrated for its rich diversity of Jurassic marine life.
Ammonites like Normannites are cephalopods—relatives of modern squid and octopus—that once thrived in the warm, shallow seas that covered much of Europe during the Jurassic period. Normannites latansatum is distinguished by its strongly ribbed, evolute shell and elegant coiling, making it a desirable addition for fossil collectors and paleontological enthusiasts.
This authentic fossil was formerly part of the Alice Purnell Collection, a respected source of meticulously curated and documented British fossils. It has been expertly cleaned and prepared to a high display standard, revealing the detailed suture patterns and preservation of the shell.
