Fossil Identification & Scientific Classification

  • Phylum: Arthropoda

  • Class: Trilobita

  • Order: Asaphida

  • Superfamily: Asaphoidea

  • Genus: Ogyginus

  • Age: Middle Ordovician

  • Stratigraphy: Llanvirn Series

  • Locality: Upper Gilwern Quarry, Wales, United Kingdom

Trilobites were extinct marine arthropods that thrived in Paleozoic seas for over 250 million years. The genus Ogyginus is one of the characteristic Welsh Ordovician trilobites and is frequently recorded from Middle Ordovician marine deposits.

Ogyginus typically displays a broad, semicircular cephalon, a defined glabella, crescent-shaped compound eyes, and a segmented thorax with articulated axial and pleural lobes. Even as a partial specimen, important anatomical features may be visible, such as sections of the cephalon, thoracic segments, and pygidium. The original calcitic exoskeleton contributed to its fossilisation potential, allowing fine structural detail to be preserved.

Geological Context – Llanvirn Stage, Middle Ordovician

During the Middle Ordovician, approximately 465–470 million years ago, Wales formed part of a marine environment situated along the margins of the ancient continent of Avalonia. Warm, shallow seas covered much of the region, supporting a diverse marine ecosystem.

Sediments deposited in these marine settings accumulated as mudstones and shales, creating the stratigraphic units now known as the Llanvirn Series. Rapid burial in fine sediment promoted fossil preservation, particularly of trilobites, brachiopods, and graptolites. Upper Gilwern Quarry is recognised as a classic Welsh locality within these Ordovician successions, yielding significant trilobite material that contributes to regional biostratigraphic understanding.

Owning a specimen from this formation represents a tangible connection to one of Britain’s most important Paleozoic marine intervals.

Ordovician Information

The Ordovician Period (485–443 million years ago) was a time of marine expansion and biodiversity growth, following the Cambrian Explosion. Warm, shallow seas covered much of the continents, supporting trilobites, brachiopods, corals, and the first true reefs. Jawless fish (early vertebrates) diversified, and the first sea scorpions (eurypterids) became dominant predators. On land, the first primitive plants (moss-like bryophytes) began colonizing damp environments. The climate was initially warm, but by the late Ordovician, a major ice age caused a drastic drop in sea levels, triggering the Ordovician-Silurian mass extinction, which wiped out nearly 85% of marine species. Despite this, the period laid the foundation for the rise of more complex ecosystems in the Silurian.
