Rare ogygiocarella bucki fossil trilobite – llanvirnian series, lower ordovician, grove farm estate, steam valley, wales

£60.00

This is a rare and well-preserved Ogygiocarella bucki fossil trilobite, dating to the Llanvirnian Series of the Lower Ordovician (~470-460 million years ago), discovered at Grove Farm Estate, Steam Valley, Wales. Trilobites like Ogygiocarella bucki thrived in the ancient Ordovician seas, playing a vital role in early marine ecosystems.

This species belongs to the Asaphidae family and is characterized by its broad, flattened cephalon (head), well-defined thoracic segments, and streamlined exoskeleton, which helped it navigate the seafloor efficiently. Ogygiocarella fossils from Wales are highly sought after due to their scientific importance and historical significance in understanding early arthropod evolution.

The Ordovician period marked a significant expansion in marine biodiversity, with trilobites, brachiopods, and primitive mollusks flourishing in warm, shallow seas. Fossils from Steam Valley, Wales provide invaluable insight into the marine environments of this ancient era.

This high-quality trilobite fossil is an excellent addition to any collection and is ideal for collectors, researchers, and enthusiasts of British paleontology.

Ordovician Information

The Ordovician Period (485–443 million years ago) was a time of marine expansion and biodiversity growth, following the Cambrian Explosion. Warm, shallow seas covered much of the continents, supporting trilobites, brachiopods, corals, and the first true reefs. Jawless fish (early vertebrates) diversified, and the first sea scorpions (eurypterids) became dominant predators. On land, the first primitive plants (moss-like bryophytes) began colonizing damp environments. The climate was initially warm, but by the late Ordovician, a major ice age caused a drastic drop in sea levels, triggering the Ordovician-Silurian mass extinction, which wiped out nearly 85% of marine species. Despite this, the period laid the foundation for the rise of more complex ecosystems in the Silurian.
