RARE Ogygiocarella debuchi Trilobite Impression Fossil | Ordovician Llandeilo Series | Leigh, Shropshire UK

£24.00

Presenting a RARE Ogygiocarella debuchi Trilobite Impression Fossil from the Llandeilo Series, dating to the Ordovician Period, expertly preserved in sediment from Leigh, Shropshire, United Kingdom. This remarkable fossil showcases a tail impression of the trilobite species Ogygiocarella debuchi, a highly recognisable genus known from the British fossil record.

This trilobite lived during the Darriwilian Stage of the Middle Ordovician, approximately 460 million years ago. The Llandeilo Series, as part of the Caradoc Terrane, is celebrated for its rich marine fauna, deposited in a warm, shallow epicontinental sea. The Chatwell Sandstone Formation, in which this fossil was discovered, represents a high-energy depositional environment with abundant sediment influx, ideal for preserving hard-bodied organisms like trilobites.

Geological & Paleontological Details:

  • Fossil Type: Impression (tail section) of Trilobite
  • Species: Ogygiocarella debuchi
  • Geological Age: Middle Ordovician, Darriwilian Stage
  • Formation: Llandeilo Series (Caradoc Group Equivalent)
  • Location: Leigh, Shropshire, UK
  • Depositional Environment: Shallow marine sandstone
  • Morphology: Characteristic pygidium with fine segmentation
  • Family: Asaphidae
  • Order: Asaphida
  • Identified by: Species originally described by Murchison, 1839

Ordovician Information

The Ordovician Period (485–443 million years ago) was a time of marine expansion and biodiversity growth, following the Cambrian Explosion. Warm, shallow seas covered much of the continents, supporting trilobites, brachiopods, corals, and the first true reefs. Jawless fish (early vertebrates) diversified, and the first sea scorpions (eurypterids) became dominant predators. On land, the first primitive plants (moss-like bryophytes) began colonizing damp environments. The climate was initially warm, but by the late Ordovician, a major ice age caused a drastic drop in sea levels, triggering the Ordovician-Silurian mass extinction, which wiped out nearly 85% of marine species. Despite this, the period laid the foundation for the rise of more complex ecosystems in the Silurian.
