Onchosaurus numidus Rostral Spine Fossil – Albian, Cretaceous: Kem Kem Basin, Morocco

This listing is for an exceptionally rare Onchosaurus numidus fossil rostral spine, dating back to the Albian stage of the Cretaceous Period (~113-100 million years ago). This incredible specimen originates from the Kem Kem Basin, Morocco, one of the most famous fossil-bearing formations known for its rich and diverse vertebrate assemblage.

Species Information – Onchosaurus numidus

Onchosaurus numidus is a member of the Sclerorhynchidae, an extinct group of sawfish-like rays that thrived during the Cretaceous. Unlike modern sawfish, which have cartilage-based skeletons, Onchosaurus had bony rostral spines, which allowed for much better fossilization. These spines were lined with sharp denticles and used as a predatory tool for slashing through schools of fish or scaring off larger marine reptiles.

The discovery of Onchosaurus fossils in the Kem Kem Beds suggests that it inhabited the warm, shallow waters of the ancient Tethys Sea, coexisting with apex predators such as Spinosaurus, Carcharodontosaurus, and Mawsonia (a giant coelacanth fish).

Geological Context – Kem Kem Formation

The Kem Kem Beds of Morocco represent an extensive fossil-rich formation, deposited during the Albian-Cenomanian stages of the Cretaceous Period (~113-93 million years ago). This region, composed of sandstone and mudstone, preserves a dynamic river system where various Cretaceous creatures thrived. The fossilized remains of Onchosaurus numidus are relatively rare compared to other vertebrates found in the formation, making this a highly sought-after specimen.

Description

Onchosaurus numidus Fossil Rostral Spine

This listing presents an Onchosaurus numidus fossil rostral spine identified with the Albian stage of the Cretaceous and associated with the Kem-Kem Basin in Morocco. Its combination of a named fossil identification, Early Cretaceous age and Moroccan geological context makes it an appealing addition to a fossil collection, natural history display or geology-focused study selection.

Fossil Identification

Onchosaurus numidus is the supplied identification for this fossil specimen. The product is described specifically as a rostral spine, making it a distinctive fossil form for collectors interested in vertebrate palaeontology and unusual anatomical elements. The term “rostral” relates to the front or snout region, so this type of fossil can add variety to collections that already include more familiar teeth, shells or bones.

Geological Context

The specimen is associated with the Albian, a stage within the Cretaceous Period. The Cretaceous is widely recognised as an important interval in Earth history, spanning a time when diverse marine and terrestrial ecosystems flourished. The Albian forms part of the later portion of the Early Cretaceous and is frequently represented in fossil-bearing sedimentary deposits around the world.

The stated locality is the Kem-Kem Basin in Morocco. This region is well known among fossil collectors for its richly fossiliferous Cretaceous deposits and for specimens that document ancient life from North Africa. Locality information is an important part of fossil collecting because it connects an individual specimen with a wider geological landscape and helps place the fossil within its broader palaeontological setting.

Collector and Display Interest

An Onchosaurus numidus rostral spine offers a distinctive subject for a fossil cabinet, educational collection, office display or geology-themed interior. Its named identification and stated Albian Cretaceous context provide useful information for cataloguing and interpreting the piece. It may also be of interest to collectors building a selection of Moroccan fossils or focusing on specimens from the Cretaceous Period.
