RARE Onnia gracilis Trilobite Tail Fossil – Caradoc Series, Upper Ordovician – Shropshire UK

£48.00

RARE: Genuine Onnia gracilis Trilobite Tail Fossil from the Caradoc Series of the Upper Ordovician, collected from the renowned Chatwell Sands locality near the Onny River, Shropshire, UK.

This specimen features the distinct pygidium (tail) of Onnia gracilis, a trilobite species known for its relatively narrow, elongated, and finely segmented tail structure. The fossil displays excellent detail and preservation, capturing key morphological characteristics typical of the species.

Geological and Palaeontological Information:

  • Fossil Type: Trilobite (Tail – Pygidium)
  • Species: Onnia gracilis
  • Geological Age: Upper Ordovician
  • Series/Stage: Caradoc Series
  • Formation/Locality: Chatwell Sands, Onny River, Shropshire, United Kingdom
  • Biozone (if known): Not formally specified
  • Depositional Environment: Marine shelf sediment, indicating a shallow marine environment rich in trilobite diversity
  • Morphology Notes: Distinctive tail with well-defined axial rings and pleural segments, moderately convex profile, and fine detailing on calcite exoskeleton
  • Family: Trinucleidae
  • Superfamily: Trinucleioidea
  • Order: Asaphida
  • Formally Described By: Murchison, 1839

Why This Fossil is Special: Wren’s Nest and surrounding areas such as the Onny River are historically significant fossil sites. Onnia gracilis is a rare and desirable taxon, particularly when found in such well-preserved condition. The tail section offered here is ideal for collectors focusing on Ordovician marine life, British palaeontology, or the evolutionary history of trilobites.

All of our Fossils are 100% Genuine Specimens & come with a Certificate of Authenticity.

Scale Reference: Scale Rule Squares / Cube = 1cm. For exact sizing, please see the accompanying photo. The specimen shown is the actual piece you will receive — no stock images used.

Ordovician Information

The Ordovician Period (485–443 million years ago) was a time of marine expansion and biodiversity growth, following the Cambrian Explosion. Warm, shallow seas covered much of the continents, supporting trilobites, brachiopods, corals, and the first true reefs. Jawless fish (early vertebrates) diversified, and the first sea scorpions (eurypterids) became dominant predators. On land, the first primitive plants (moss-like bryophytes) began colonizing damp environments. The climate was initially warm, but by the late Ordovician, a major ice age caused a drastic drop in sea levels, triggering the Ordovician-Silurian mass extinction, which wiped out nearly 85% of marine species. Despite this, the period laid the foundation for the rise of more complex ecosystems in the Silurian.
