RARE Ourisia micrurus Fossil Trilobite Mass Death Assemblage – Upper Cambrian, Cwmhesgyn Fm, Craig-y-Dinas, Wales

Original price was: £360.00.Current price is: £324.00.

RARE Ourisia micrurus Trilobite Fossil – Mass Death Assemblage

Formation: Cwmhesgyn Formation

Geological Series: Merioneth Series

Geological Period: Upper Cambrian

Locality: Craig-y-Dinas, Wales, UK

This exceptionally preserved fossil represents a mass mortality assemblage of the rare Ourisia micrurus trilobite, from the top beds of the Cwmhesgyn Formation at the classic locality of Craig-y-Dinas in Wales. These fossils date back to the Upper Cambrian, making them over 490 million years old.

This particular slab shows multiple overlapping individuals, capturing a genuine palaeoecological event frozen in time. It may represent a sudden burial event in an anoxic or storm-related depositional environment, rapidly covering a living population.

Fossil Details:

  • Taxon: Ourisia micrurus
  • Type: Trilobite (Arthropoda)
  • Preservation: Positive & possibly partial moults in situ
  • Morphological Features: Narrow cephalon and pygidium, slender thoracic segments, consistent with Ourisia genus
  • Biozone: Parabolina spinulosa Zone or equivalent (Uppermost Cambrian)
  • Geological Age: ~494–485 million years ago
  • Family: Olenidae
  • Order: Ptychopariida
  • Formally Described by: Richter, 1956

Geological & Environmental Context:

These trilobites lived in a deep marine basin, typical of the Welsh Basin palaeogeography, where fine-grained sediments such as shales and mudstones were deposited. The Cwmhesgyn Formation is renowned for preserving fossil assemblages in dark laminated mudstones, indicating deposition below storm wave base, in low oxygen conditions—perfect for preserving delicate trilobites like Ourisia micrurus.

Authenticity & Display:

  • All of our Fossils are 100% Genuine Specimens & come with a Certificate of Authenticity.
  • The fossil shown in the photo is the exact specimen you will receive.
  • Scale rule/cube = 1cm. Please see photo for full sizing.

Cambrian Information

The Cambrian Period (541–485 million years ago) was the first period of the Paleozoic Era, marking a dramatic explosion of life known as the Cambrian Explosion. During this time, complex multicellular organisms rapidly diversified, giving rise to the first arthropods, mollusks, echinoderms, and chordates—early ancestors of vertebrates. The climate was generally warm, with high sea levels covering much of the continents, creating vast shallow seas where life thrived. Iconic creatures such as Trilobites, Anomalocaris, and Opabinia dominated the oceans, while the first primitive reefs formed. The Cambrian set the stage for the evolution of modern animal groups and the complexity of marine ecosystems.
