RARE Paraceratites elegans Fossil Ammonite, Triassic: Borgogna, Italy – 100% Genuine with Certificate of Authenticity

£78.00

This Paraceratites elegans fossil ammonite is an exceptionally rare and fascinating specimen from the Triassic Period, discovered in the Borgogna region of Italy. Paraceratites elegans is a unique ammonite species, known for its distinctive spiral shape and elegant, finely ribbed shell. This fossil offers a rare glimpse into the marine life that existed during the Triassic Period, making it a prized piece for any serious fossil collector.

Geological Information:

  • Geological Stage: Triassic (Approximately 252 to 201 million years ago)
  • Depositional Environment: The Triassic Period was characterized by the evolution of marine life and the formation of shallow seas and lagoons. The Borgogna region of Italy was once a marine environment, where ammonites like Paraceratites elegans thrived. These ammonites were preserved in sedimentary rocks, primarily limestone and marl, formed by the accumulation of marine organisms and their remains. This fossil gives insight into the marine ecosystems of the Triassic period, which were rich in marine life such as ammonites, bivalves, and other early marine species.
  • Biozone: Fossils from the Triassic Period contribute valuable information about the early development of ammonites and marine biodiversity. Paraceratites elegans belongs to a group of ammonites that helps scientists understand the transition of life forms from the Permian to the Triassic, a crucial period for marine life recovery after the mass extinction event at the end of the Permian.

Fossil Features:

  • Family: Ceratitidae
  • Super Family: Ceratitoidea
  • Order: Ammonitida
  • Morphology: The Paraceratites elegans ammonite features a distinctly coiled shell with fine ribbing. The evolute shell exhibits a gradual expansion of whorls as it matures. The ribs on the shell are well-defined, creating a textured surface that adds to the fossil’s beauty. The suture lines are visible, showcasing the intricate internal structure of the ammonite’s shell. This ammonite represents an important evolutionary form in the ammonite lineage, known for its elegant shell design and distinctive ribs.

Notable Details:

  • This fossil is 100% GENUINE and comes with a Certificate of Authenticity, ensuring its authenticity and historical value.
  • The specimen has been carefully selected for its high-quality preservation. The photograph provided shows the actual specimen you will receive, ensuring full transparency in your purchase.
  • Scale Rule: The scale rule squares/cube shown in the photo represents 1cm, allowing you to accurately gauge the size of the fossil. Full sizing details are available in the photograph.

Triassic Information

The Triassic Period (252–201 million years ago) marked the beginning of the Mesozoic Era, following the Permian-Triassic mass extinction, the most severe extinction event in Earth's history. The climate was hot and dry, with vast deserts and little polar ice. Life slowly recovered, leading to the rise of the first dinosaurs, pterosaurs (flying reptiles), and early mammals. Reptiles, including large archosaurs (ancestors of crocodiles and dinosaurs), dominated both land and sea. In the oceans, ichthyosaurs and plesiosaurs thrived alongside ammonites and early coral reefs. The first true conifers and ginkgo trees spread across the land. The period ended with another mass extinction, paving the way for the Jurassic and the golden age of dinosaurs.
