RARE Protogrammoceras bassanii Fossil Ammonite – Upper Pliensbachian, Jurassic – Italy – Alice Purnell Collection

Original price was: £36.00.Current price is: £32.40.

Offered here is a beautifully preserved fossil ammonite of the species Protogrammoceras bassanii, dating to the Upper Pliensbachian Stage of the Early Jurassic, approximately 189 to 183 million years ago. This rare ammonite fossil was discovered in Italy, a region renowned for its exceptional Jurassic marine deposits, and comes from the Alice Purnell Collection, known for its museum-grade, authenticated fossil specimens.

Protogrammoceras bassanii is an extinct species of ammonite within the order Ammonitida and family Hildoceratidae. It is distinguished by its compressed shell, finely ribbed ornamentation, and moderately involute coiling. As a nektonic predator, it would have been an active swimmer in the shallow seas of the Jurassic period, part of a rich ecosystem of early marine reptiles, molluscs, and fish.

The fossil exhibits excellent preservation of the whorls, ribs, and overall shell shape. It is ideal for educational, display, or scientific purposes.

Geological Context: The Upper Pliensbachian Stage represents a significant time in marine evolution, as seas expanded across much of what is now Europe. The Italian deposits where this ammonite was found are characterised by fine limestones and marls, which allowed for detailed fossil preservation. Ammonites from this time and region are widely used in biostratigraphy to date and correlate global Jurassic strata.

Jurassic Information

The Jurassic Period (201–145 million years ago) was the golden age of dinosaurs, with iconic species like Brachiosaurus, Stegosaurus, and Allosaurus dominating the land. It was a time of warm, humid climates, with high sea levels that created vast shallow seas, supporting abundant marine reptiles, ammonites, and early coral reefs. The first birds, such as Archaeopteryx, evolved from small theropod dinosaurs, while early mammals remained small and nocturnal. Lush forests of cycads, conifers, and ferns covered the land, providing food for giant herbivores. The breakup of the supercontinent Pangaea accelerated, shaping Earth's geography and setting the stage for the diverse ecosystems of the Cretaceous.
