RARE Protogrammoceras isseliodes Fossil Ammonite – Jurassic Upper Pliensbachian, Amelleigo Morocco – Certified Specimen

£36.00

This listing features a RARE Protogrammoceras isseliodes fossil ammonite, discovered in the Amelleigo region of Morocco, and dating from the Upper Pliensbachian Stage of the Lower Jurassic Period. The photo shows the actual fossil specimen you will receive, carefully selected for its preservation, detail, and scientific importance.

Geological & Palaeontological Background:

  • Species: Protogrammoceras isseliodes
  • Type: Extinct ammonite (marine cephalopod mollusc)
  • Geological Period: Jurassic
  • Geological Stage: Upper Pliensbachian (approx. 187–183 million years ago)
  • Location: Amelleigo, Morocco

Protogrammoceras is a genus of early Jurassic ammonites known for their generally involute shells with rounded to sub-rounded whorls and often finely ribbed or slightly compressed ornamentation. As a genus belonging to the Family Dactylioceratidae, within the Superfamily Eoderoceratoidea and Order Ammonitida, this species reflects typical characteristics of ammonites that thrived in open marine environments of the Jurassic seas.

While Protogrammoceras isseliodes is rarely encountered in the fossil trade, it is a known biostratigraphic marker within the Spinatum Zone of the Upper Pliensbachian. Its presence helps to correlate marine sedimentary deposits across ancient European and North African basins.

Morphology & Notable Features:

  • Coiled, planispiral shell
  • Gently rounded venter and sides
  • Distinctive ribbing or subtle ornamentation (depending on preservation)
  • Often preserved in fine-grained sedimentary limestone or marlstone

Depositional Environment: This fossil was deposited in an epicontinental marine shelf environment where calm conditions and fine sedimentation allowed for excellent preservation of cephalopod remains. Fossils from this setting are often flattened or partially recrystallised, preserving detailed external moulds.

Identification: While this specimen has not been attributed to a specific formal researcher in this listing, the taxonomic classification aligns with established literature on Moroccan ammonite assemblages from the Pliensbachian.

Additional Details:

  • Certificate of Authenticity included: We guarantee this is a genuine fossil specimen.
  • Sizing: See photo with Scale Rule Cube. Each square = 1cm.
  • A carefully selected and rare ammonite, ideal for fossil collectors, educators, or palaeontology enthusiasts.

Add a true Jurassic relic to your collection with this rare Protogrammoceras isseliodes ammonite—an authentic and scientifically significant fossil from the ancient seaways of what is now Morocco.
