Description

**Rare Scutellum Trilobite Fossil**

This genuine Scutellum trilobite is an A-grade fossil from Ofaten, Morocco, dating from the Lower Devonian. It is a carefully selected natural specimen with strong display appeal and genuine palaeontological interest. The photographs show the exact fossil you will receive, so its preservation, matrix, preparation, colour and individual character can be examined before purchase. Please use the photographs for full sizing.

**Lower Devonian Marine Geology**

During the Lower Devonian, the region that is now south-eastern Morocco formed part of the northern margin of the ancient continent Gondwana. Warm shallow seas covered large areas and supported diverse communities of trilobites, brachiopods, cephalopods, corals, crinoids and other marine organisms. Sediment accumulated on the seabed and occasionally buried their remains before decay and disturbance could destroy them.

The rocks at Ofaten preserve evidence of these ancient marine environments. After burial, compaction and chemical alteration gradually transformed sediment into rock. The mineralised dorsal exoskeleton of this trilobite was preserved through mineral replacement and related fossilisation processes. Later uplift, weathering and erosion exposed the fossil-bearing strata, allowing specimens to be discovered and prepared for study.

**Scutellum Form and Adaptation**

Scutellum is a distinctive trilobite associated with the family Scutelluidae. Like all trilobites, its body is organised into a cephalon or head shield, an articulated thorax and a pygidium or tail shield, with a central axial lobe bordered by paired pleural lobes. Scutelluid trilobites are especially recognisable for their broad, often fan-shaped pygidium and comparatively smooth, streamlined appearance.

The mineralised exoskeleton protected the animal as it lived on or close to the seabed. Flexible thoracic segments allowed movement, while the wide body distributed its weight over soft marine sediment. Its flattened outline and large tail shield are important features for identifying the group and make Scutellum very different in appearance from more strongly ribbed or spiny trilobites.

Trilobites were early marine arthropods that survived for more than 270 million years and developed many specialised body forms before becoming extinct at the end of the Permian. This Scutellum fossil provides a tangible example of arthropod evolution and the ecological variety present in ancient seas.

**A-Grade Collectable Fossil**

This specimen is suitable for a fossil cabinet, geology collection, classroom resource or natural history display. Its broad outline, authentic Moroccan provenance and unusual scutelluid morphology make it an appealing addition for collectors representing the diversity of Devonian trilobites.

As an excavated and professionally prepared natural fossil, it may show matrix, mineral staining, small cracks, preparation marks, stabilised or restored areas, minor chips and variations in surface texture. These are normal characteristics of prepared trilobites and form part of the specimen’s individual history. The photographs document the actual piece supplied rather than a stock image.

**Certificate of Authenticity**

Your fossil includes a generic Certificate of Authenticity card with a lifetime guarantee. This confirms that the piece is a genuine fossil and records its supplied identification, geological age and Moroccan provenance. Its combination of rarity, A-grade presentation, distinctive morphology and documented authenticity makes it an excellent acquisition for a trilobite specialist or a memorable gift for anyone fascinated by fossils, evolution and prehistoric marine life.
