Geological & Scientific Information:

  • Species: Sharpeiceras schlueteri
  • Type: Fossil Ammonite (extinct marine mollusc)
  • Geological Period: Cretaceous
  • Stage: Lower Cenomanian (approx. 100.5 to 93.9 million years ago)
  • Location Found: Cap Blanc Nez, Hauts-de-France, France
  • Order: Ammonitida
  • Superfamily: Acanthoceratoidea
  • Family: Acanthoceratidae
  • Morphological Features: Typically involute with strongly ribbed ornamentation, bearing prominent tubercles on the whorl shoulders. Shell structure ideal for stratigraphic classification.

  • Biozone/Zone: Lower Cenomanian ammonite zones (exact subzone may require local stratigraphic correlation).
  • Scientific Importance: This species serves as a biostratigraphic marker for Lower Cenomanian deposits in the Paris Basin and across other European localities.

Additional Notes:

Sharpeiceras schlueteri is highly sought after due to its diagnostic features and scarcity in well-preserved form. Its presence helps paleontologists to accurately date chalk strata and reconstruct palaeoenvironmental conditions of the mid-Cretaceous seas.
