Description
This is a rare and well-preserved Stephanoceras sp. ammonite fossil from the Ovalis Zone of the Inferior Oolite, Middle Jurassic (~170 million years ago). It was discovered in Sherborne, Dorset, UK, a well-known fossil locality within the Jurassic Coast region.
Stephanoceras is an extinct genus of ammonites belonging to the family Stephanoceratidae, characterized by its ornate, ribbed shell with pronounced tubercles. These ammonites were fast-moving marine predators, using their tentacles to capture prey in the warm Jurassic seas.
