Description
This is a RARE and authentic Syringopora fossil coral from the Carboniferous Limestone of Cheddar Gorge, located in the scenic Mendip Hills of Somerset, UK. Dating to the Carboniferous period (~330 million years ago), this stunning colonial coral formed part of an ancient warm, shallow marine reef system.
Syringopora corals are characterised by their delicate and distinctive tubular corallites, which are loosely connected in colonies rather than being fused. The corallites are thin-walled and run parallel or diverge slightly, creating an elegant and intricate appearance. These corals are an important part of ancient reef-building communities and are often used in palaeoenvironmental reconstructions.
This specimen displays beautifully preserved corallite tubes with visible internal structures, making it a superb addition to any fossil or geological collection.
