£36.00

This Uraloceras involutum fossil goniatite is a rare and fascinating specimen from the Permian period, discovered in Kazakhstan. As a member of the goniatite group of ammonoids, Uraloceras involutum is characterized by its distinctive coiled shell and fine ribbing, making it a unique and valuable fossil for collectors and researchers alike. The Permian period was a pivotal time in Earth’s history, following the Devonian and preceding the Triassic, and this fossil provides valuable insight into the marine life of that era.

Geological Information:

  • Geological Stage: Permian (Approximately 298 to 252 million years ago)
  • Depositional Environment: During the Permian period, the Kazakhstan region was part of the Tethys Sea, a shallow marine environment that provided ideal conditions for the development of various marine life, including goniatites like Uraloceras involutum. Fossils from this period are crucial in understanding the marine ecosystems of the time, particularly as the Permian extinction event was approaching.
  • Biozone: Fossils from the Permian biozone help to elucidate the biodiversity and the evolutionary processes that took place during the period. Goniatites like Uraloceras involutum thrived before the mass extinction event that significantly altered life on Earth.

Fossil Features:

  • Family: Goniatitidae
  • Super Family: Ammonoidea
  • Order: Ammonitida
  • Morphology: The Uraloceras involutum fossil goniatite displays a well-preserved spiral shell with fine, prominent ribbing. The shell has a smooth texture with a noticeable, defined suture pattern. This ammonoid is known for its distinctive evolutionary features, including its smooth, rounded form and the spiral structure of its shell.
  • Zone: Found within the Permian biozone, this fossil provides a window into the marine ecosystems of the time, which is essential for understanding the diversity of life during the Permian period.

Notable Details:

  • This fossil is 100% GENUINE and comes with a Certificate of Authenticity, ensuring that it is a legitimate and valuable specimen.
  • The fossil has been carefully selected for its high-quality preservation. The photograph shows the actual specimen you will receive, offering full transparency in your purchase.

Permian Information

The Permian Period (299–252 million years ago) was a time of dramatic climate shifts and evolutionary advancements, marking the end of the Paleozoic Era. Initially, the climate was warm and humid, supporting vast conifer forests and swampy environments, but it gradually became drier as the supercontinent Pangaea fully formed. This led to the expansion of early reptiles, including synapsids like Dimetrodon, which were distant ancestors of mammals. Amphibians thrived in wetlands, while the first conifer trees became dominant. In the oceans, ammonites, brachiopods, and early sharks flourished. However, the Permian ended with the largest mass extinction in Earth’s history, the Permian-Triassic Extinction, wiping out nearly 90% of marine species and 70% of land species, paving the way for the rise of dinosaurs in the Triassic.
