RARE Zugodactylites braunianus Fossil Ammonite (Microconch) – Lower Toarcian, Jurassic, Yorkshire Coast, UK – Genuine Specimen with COA

£14.40

This is a rare Zugodactylites braunianus fossil ammonite (microconch), dating back to the Lower Toarcian stage of the Early Jurassic period (~183-180 million years ago), discovered along the Yorkshire Coast, UK. Zugodactylites is a genus of ammonites belonging to the Dactylioceratidae family, known for its finely ribbed shell with distinctive keel-like features.

This specimen is a microconch, the smaller male form of the species, characterized by more delicate ornamentation compared to its macroconch counterpart. It provides valuable insight into sexual dimorphism in ammonites, a key area of paleontological research.

The Yorkshire Coast is renowned for its rich Jurassic fossil deposits, particularly in the Whitby Mudstone Formation, where exceptional preservation allows fine details of ammonite shells to be seen. This fossil is an excellent addition to any collection, representing a significant period in ammonite evolution.

Jurassic Information

The Jurassic Period (201–145 million years ago) was the golden age of dinosaurs, with iconic species like Brachiosaurus, Stegosaurus, and Allosaurus dominating the land. It was a time of warm, humid climates, with high sea levels that created vast shallow seas, supporting abundant marine reptiles, ammonites, and early coral reefs. The first birds, such as Archaeopteryx, evolved from small theropod dinosaurs, while early mammals remained small and nocturnal. Lush forests of cycads, conifers, and ferns covered the land, providing food for giant herbivores. The breakup of the supercontinent Pangaea accelerated, shaping Earth's geography and setting the stage for the diverse ecosystems of the Cretaceous.
