Description
Presenting a fascinating Fossil Rastellum oyster bivalve, often nicknamed the “Fossil Alien” due to its distinctive ridged and radial symmetry giving it an otherworldly appearance. This specimen comes from the Cretaceous period, specifically from Marovoay, Mahajanga district, Madagascar.
A beautifully preserved and naturally striking example of a prehistoric marine bivalve, Rastellum sp. belonged to the family Ostreidae, within the order Ostreida. These filter-feeding oysters lived in shallow marine environments and are especially recognisable for their strongly ribbed shells with elongated hinge lines and narrow, zig-zag shaped valves.
This genuine fossil is a carefully chosen piece, and the photo shows the actual specimen you will receive. It is professionally photographed with a scale cube = 1 cm for accurate sizing. For full dimensions, please refer to the photo provided.
These bivalves were epifaunal, attaching themselves to substrates in warm, shallow seas. The fossils from Mahajanga are known for their exceptional preservation due to the fine marine sediments that covered them quickly post-mortem.
