Description
Authentic Sand Tiger Shark Tooth – Odontaspis winklerti Fossil – Eocene, Nanjemoy Formation
This is a genuine Odontaspis winklerti fossil shark tooth, carefully sourced from the Early Eocene (Ypresian) deposits of Bed B, Potapaco Member, Nanjemoy Formation, Fredericksburg, Virginia, USA. Dating back approximately 56–47 million years, this exceptional fossil represents an extinct species of sand tiger shark that once thrived in prehistoric marine ecosystems.
Sand tiger sharks, belonging to the family Odontaspididae, are known for their distinctive, slender, curved teeth with sharp tips, ideal for capturing slippery prey. Odontaspis winklerti was a close relative of modern sand tiger sharks and inhabited warm shallow seas during the early Cenozoic era.
