The prehistoric reptiles known as Dinosaurs became present during the Middle to Late Triassic Period of the Mesozoic Era, around 230 million years ago. They were members of a subclass of reptiles called the Archosaurs, meaning “Ruling Reptiles”, which is a group that also includes birds and crocodiles!

Unfortunately Dinosaurs became wiped out at the end of the Cretaceous Period, around 65 million years ago. The cause that wiped these creatures out, & marks the end of the Cretaceous and the beginning of the Paleogene period, remains a scientific mystery!

Scientists tend to be locked on to one of two hypotheses that may explain the catastrophic natural disaster, either an extreme asteroid or comet impacting with the Earth, or a massive bout of super volcano eruptions! Either scenario would have caused mass destruction to our planet, creating devastating havoc such as choking ash clouds & debris filling the skies, greenhouse gases locking in the atmosphere causing the temperature to soar to unbelievable highs, and much much more! The world would have drastically changed for the worst, resulting in chaos for all that roamed the land! However, this disaster that’s believed to have wiped out the dinosaurs remarkably didn’t destroy everything! Most mammals, turtles, crocodiles, salamanders, and frogs somehow survived, as did birds, snails, bivalves, starfish, and sea urchins. Even hardy plants were able to escape death from the extreme climate changes!

Fortunately for us though the creatures are not a lost memory of what once was, as the discovery of their fossilised remains, such as bone, teeth & eggshell, can tell us so much information about an incredibly important part of history & help piece together the start of our very own existence.

Description

Now available is a stunning and 100% genuine polished chunk of Sauropod Dinosaur Bone, originating from the Cretaceous deposits of the High Atlas region in Morocco. This specimen has been carefully selected and hand-polished to enhance the visibility of its internal bone cell structure—clearly showcasing the ancient cellular patterns that once supported one of Earth’s largest terrestrial animals.

Geological & Species Information:

  • Specimen: Sauropod Dinosaur Bone (polished chunk)
  • Age: Cretaceous Period (~145 to 66 million years ago)
  • Location: High Atlas Mountains, Morocco
  • Fossil Type: Fossilised bone tissue from a Sauropod dinosaur
  • Group: Dinosauria – Suborder: Sauropodomorpha
  • Scale cube = 1cm – see photo for accurate sizing

Sauropods were long-necked, herbivorous dinosaurs that roamed the Earth during the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods. These massive reptiles—like Diplodocus, Brachiosaurus, and Argentinosaurus—were among the largest animals to ever walk on land. Fossilised bone fragments like this one offer an extraordinary window into their ancient biology and evolution.

This specimen was recovered from the fossil-rich Cretaceous strata of the High Atlas Mountains in Morocco, a region famous for yielding an exceptional array of vertebrate fossils from the late Mesozoic era. The bone has been partially polished, allowing the inner vascular and cellular structures to be visible—an educational and visually captivating detail for both collectors and educators.

The Dinosaur Extinction Story:

Dinosaurs first appeared during the Triassic Period (around 230 million years ago) and quickly diversified into one of the most successful animal groups in Earth’s history. They dominated the land for over 160 million years before a catastrophic extinction event, believed to be caused by either an asteroid impact or massive volcanic activity, marked the end of the Cretaceous Period (approximately 66 million years ago).

This extinction event led to the demise of all non-avian dinosaurs, yet life continued. Birds, mammals, reptiles like crocodiles and turtles, and many invertebrates survived and adapted—paving the way for the modern biodiversity we know today.

Key Features:

  • 100% authentic dinosaur fossil – comes with a Certificate of Authenticity
  • Polished surface reveals fossilised bone cell structure

Cretaceous Information

The Cretaceous Period (145–66 million years ago) was the final era of the Mesozoic, marked by the dominance of dinosaurs and the rise of flowering plants. It had a warm, greenhouse climate, with high sea levels that created vast shallow inland seas. Marine life flourished, including mosasaurs, ammonites, and rudist reefs, while the land was ruled by iconic dinosaurs like Tyrannosaurus rex, Triceratops, and Spinosaurus. Mammals and birds diversified, and insects thrived. The period ended with the mass extinction event, likely caused by an asteroid impact, wiping out the dinosaurs and paving the way for the rise of mammals in the Cenozoic.
