SCAPHITES EQUALIS Fossil Heteromorph Ammonite Lower Cenomanian Cretaceous Pinhay Dorset UK Authentic Specimen

£60.00

This listing features a rare and authentic fossil heteromorph ammonite: Scaphites equalis, collected from the Lower Cenomanian strata of the Cretaceous Period, at Pinhay, Dorset, United Kingdom. The fossil is beautifully preserved and is presented with a Certificate of Authenticity.

Scaphites equalis belongs to a group of ammonites called heteromorphs, known for their unusual shell shapes that deviate from the classic tightly coiled planispiral forms. It is a member of the:

  • Order: Ammonitida
  • Superfamily: Scaphitoidea
  • Family: Scaphitidae

These ammonites lived during the Lower Cenomanian Stage, approximately 100.5 to 93.9 million years ago, in the early part of the Late Cretaceous Epoch. Fossils from the Pinhay Bay area are part of the Chalk Group and associated sedimentary sequences that represent a warm, shallow marine shelf environment teeming with marine life.

Morphological Features:

  • Distinctive heteromorph shell: initial tightly coiled whorls followed by a straight or recurved hook-like section
  • Ornamented with strong ribbing and possible tubercles or nodes
  • Aperture positioned anteriorly, aiding buoyancy and orientation in the water column

These features suggest a unique mode of life among ammonites, likely involving slow swimming and hovering in the water, possibly near the sea floor.

Specimen Details:

  • Species: Scaphites equalis
  • Fossil Type: Heteromorph Ammonite Shell
  • Geological Age: Lower Cenomanian (Early Late Cretaceous)
  • Location: Pinhay, Dorset, United Kingdom
  • Depositional Environment: Shallow marine carbonate shelf (Chalk Group facies)
  • Order: Ammonitida
  • Family: Scaphitidae

The photo displays the exact specimen you will receive. Scale rule squares/cube = 1cm. Please refer to the image for full sizing.

This is a fine collector-grade specimen of a Cretaceous heteromorph ammonite, ideal for display, teaching, or scientific interest. Specimens from Pinhay are becoming increasingly scarce, making this a valuable addition to any palaeontological collection.

All of our Fossils are 100% Genuine Specimens & come with a Certificate of Authenticity.

Cretaceous Information

The Cretaceous Period (145–66 million years ago) was the final era of the Mesozoic, marked by the dominance of dinosaurs and the rise of flowering plants. It had a warm, greenhouse climate, with high sea levels that created vast shallow inland seas. Marine life flourished, including mosasaurs, ammonites, and rudist reefs, while the land was ruled by iconic dinosaurs like Tyrannosaurus rex, Triceratops, and Spinosaurus. Mammals and birds diversified, and insects thrived. The period ended with the mass extinction event, likely caused by an asteroid impact, wiping out the dinosaurs and paving the way for the rise of mammals in the Cenozoic.
