Lower Cenomanian Cretaceous Age

The Cenomanian is the earliest stage of the Late Cretaceous Period, beginning approximately 100.5 million years ago. This fossil comes from the Lower Cenomanian, close to the start of that stage. High global sea levels created broad shallow marine environments across Europe. Southern Britain lay beneath warm seas inhabited by ammonites, bivalves, echinoids, fish, and many other organisms.

After death, an ammonite shell could settle on the sea floor and become buried by fine sediment. Compaction, mineral replacement, and later geological change preserved the shell or internal mould as a fossil. The documented Lower Cenomanian age gives this specimen a clear place within the early Upper Cretaceous marine succession.

Schloenbachia varians subplana

Schloenbachia was an extinct marine cephalopod with a coiled shell divided internally into chambers. The living animal occupied the final body chamber, while earlier sealed chambers assisted with buoyancy control. Ammonites were relatives of modern squid, cuttlefish, and nautiluses, although they formed their own diverse and now extinct group.

Schloenbachia varians is famous for considerable variation in shell form and ornament. The subplana form is associated with a comparatively compressed or flatter shell profile while retaining characteristic Schloenbachia features. Individuals may show curved ribs, subtle to stronger tubercles, an umbilical region, and a keel along the outer edge.
