SCIPONOCERAS CF. BOHEMICUM BACULITE AMMONITE FOSSIL
This genuine Sciponoceras cf. bohemicum fossil comes from Glynde in East Sussex, England. It dates to the Cenomanian stage of the Upper Cretaceous, approximately 94 to 100 million years ago. Sciponoceras is a straight-shelled heteromorph ammonite commonly described as a baculite. The photographs show the exact carefully selected specimen that you will receive.
CRETACEOUS AGE AND SUSSEX GEOLOGY
During the Cenomanian, sea levels were exceptionally high and warm marine waters covered much of southern Britain. Fine carbonate mud accumulated on the seabed and eventually became chalk. Ammonites, inoceramid bivalves, echinoids, fish and numerous microscopic organisms lived within these seas. Their remains provide a detailed record of the Upper Cretaceous marine environment.
Glynde lies within the classic chalk landscape of East Sussex. Fossils from this area offer a direct connection to the ancient sea that once covered the South Downs. A specimen with a documented locality and geological stage carries valuable context for collectors of British palaeontology and regional geology.
HETEROMORPH AMMONITE FORM
Unlike the familiar tightly coiled ammonites, Sciponoceras possessed a predominantly straight shell. It belongs to the heteromorph ammonites, a diverse group that departed from conventional spiral coiling. The shell was internally divided into chambers by septa. The animal occupied the final living chamber, while the older sealed chambers helped regulate buoyancy.
Sciponoceras shells were slender and gently tapering, with sutures marking the boundaries between internal chambers. The straight form makes baculites visually distinctive and demonstrates the remarkable variety of shell designs developed by Cretaceous ammonites. The designation cf. bohemicum indicates that the fossil compares closely with that species while retaining appropriate caution in identification.
The surviving shape, natural matrix, chamber detail and mineral texture of this example record part of the original shell.
