Description

Genuine Shark Dorsal Fin Spine Fossil from the Perbeck Beds of Dorset

This genuine Shark Dorsal Fin Spine fossil is an exceptional prehistoric marine specimen recovered from the famous Durlston Formation, Perbeck Beds of Durlston Bay, Swanage, Dorset, England. Dating to the Early Cretaceous period, this fascinating fossil preserves part of the defensive dorsal spine from an ancient shark that inhabited the shallow lagoons and coastal waters of southern Britain over 140 million years ago.

The fossil shown in the photographs is the exact specimen you will receive. Carefully selected for its quality and natural preservation, this authentic fossil has been discovered by our own team members, Alister and Alison, and professionally cleaned, prepped and treated by Alison to preserve the intricate surface detail and natural fossil structure.

This specimen includes a fully hand-signed Premium Certificate of Authenticity confirming the fossil is 100% genuine.

Ancient Sharks of the Perbeck Beds

Shark dorsal fin spines are among the most distinctive vertebrate fossils recovered from the Perbeck Beds. These spines formed part of the shark’s defensive anatomy and were positioned in front of the dorsal fins to help protect the animal from predators. Many ancient shark groups evolved heavily mineralised spines with ridged outer surfaces and strong internal structures designed for both defence and stability while swimming.

The Perbeck fossil beds are known for preserving remains of hybodont sharks and other early cartilaginous fish that thrived in lagoons, estuaries and shallow coastal environments during the transition between the Late Jurassic and Early Cretaceous. Fossilised fin spines from this region are highly collectable due to their rarity, geological significance and striking appearance.

This specimen displays the natural texture and structure expected from fossil shark fin spines, preserving details formed during the life of the animal and fossilised over millions of years within sedimentary deposits.

Durlston Formation and Geological Importance

The Durlston Formation at Swanage is one of Britain’s most historically important fossil-bearing rock sequences. The Perbeck Beds consist of alternating limestones, shales and marls deposited within a complex environment of freshwater lagoons, coastal floodplains and shallow marine conditions. These deposits preserve an extraordinary range of fossils including fish, sharks, crocodilians, turtles, insects, plants and dinosaurs.

Durlston Bay has long attracted palaeontologists and fossil collectors due to the exceptional preservation and diversity of fossils found within the cliffs and fallen blocks along the Jurassic Coast. Fossils from this locality provide valuable evidence of changing environmental conditions during the Early Cretaceous and offer insight into the evolution of prehistoric aquatic ecosystems.

Natural Preservation and Preparation

This fossil has been carefully prepared to reveal its authentic natural features while maintaining the integrity of the original specimen. No artificial casting or reproduction has been used. The visible textures, colouration and mineralisation are genuine characteristics developed during the fossilisation process.

Every fossil collected by our team is individually selected for quality, scientific interest and display appeal. This shark dorsal fin spine makes an impressive addition to any fossil collection, natural history display, geology cabinet or educational collection.

Premium Certificate of Authenticity

Your specimen includes a fully hand-signed Premium Certificate of Authenticity confirming the fossil’s authenticity and provenance. The fossil photographed is the exact piece you will receive, allowing collectors to purchase with complete confidence.

This genuine shark fossil is ideal for collectors of prehistoric fish fossils, vertebrate fossils, British fossils, Jurassic Coast specimens, Cretaceous fossils and authentic natural history artefacts from the United Kingdom.

Cretaceous Information

The Cretaceous Period (145–66 million years ago) was the final era of the Mesozoic, marked by the dominance of dinosaurs and the rise of flowering plants. It had a warm, greenhouse climate, with high sea levels that created vast shallow inland seas. Marine life flourished, including mosasaurs, ammonites, and rudist reefs, while the land was ruled by iconic dinosaurs like Tyrannosaurus rex, Triceratops, and Spinosaurus. Mammals and birds diversified, and insects thrived. The period ended with the mass extinction event, likely caused by an asteroid impact, wiping out the dinosaurs and paving the way for the rise of mammals in the Cenozoic.
