Step back in time over 50 million years with this authentic Eocene-era shark vertebra fossil, sourced from the phosphate-rich fossil beds of Morocco. This genuine vertebra belonged to a prehistoric shark that once ruled the warm tropical seas of the Tethys Ocean, which covered parts of North Africa during the Eocene Epoch.

Unlike teeth, which are commonly found due to sharks shedding them regularly, vertebrae are much rarer and offer a fascinating insight into the anatomy of these incredible marine predators. The vertebrae of sharks are made of cartilage rather than bone, which typically decomposes rapidly. Under the right conditions, such as those found in Morocco’s phosphate deposits, these cartilaginous structures can mineralise and become beautifully preserved fossils.

Geological Context:

Morocco is one of the world’s most significant fossil sites for marine Eocene life, especially within the Ouled Abdoun Basin, near the town of Khouribga. This area is renowned for its phosphate mines, which have yielded some of the most complete and well-preserved fossils of prehistoric sharks, bony fish, and marine reptiles. The mineral-rich sediments allowed delicate structures like vertebrae to fossilise, making this an ideal location for such discoveries.

About Sharks in the Eocene:

Sharks have existed for over 400 million years, and during the Eocene they were already well-evolved apex predators. The vertebrae of sharks, such as the one you see here, supported powerful tails and flexible bodies that allowed for swift, agile movement in the ocean. This fossil is a rare and beautiful piece of Earth’s ancient marine history.

Why This Specimen Is Special:

* Rare compared to shark teeth

* Offers anatomical insight into prehistoric sharks

* From the renowned Moroccan fossil beds

* Beautiful natural preservation and shape

* Excellent for collectors, education, or display

Eocene Information

The Eocene Period (56–33.9 million years ago) was a time of warm global temperatures and the rapid evolution of mammals following the extinction of the dinosaurs. The climate was hot and humid, with lush rainforests covering much of the planet, even near the poles. Mammals diversified into new ecological roles, with early primates, whales (like Basilosaurus), large herbivores, and carnivores emerging. Birds and reptiles also thrived, and the first grasses began spreading, setting the stage for later grassland ecosystems. By the late Eocene, the Earth’s climate cooled significantly, leading to the formation of the first Antarctic ice sheets and the eventual transition to the drier, cooler Oligocene Period.
