Fossil Type and Species

Silesitoides escragnollensis is an ammonite, an extinct marine cephalopod related to modern squid, cuttlefish, and nautilus. Ammonites lived inside chambered shells, with the animal occupying the final outer body chamber. The earlier internal chambers helped regulate buoyancy, allowing the ammonite to move through the water column of prehistoric seas.

Ammonites are among the most important fossils in geology because they evolved rapidly and were widely distributed across ancient marine environments. Their changing shell forms allow palaeontologists to date and correlate rock layers with great accuracy.
